My Journey to ‘Be at Your Peak’: Overcoming Setbacks and Building Strength | Transcend Performance

From Survival to Summit: My Journey to ‘Be at Your Peak’

Setbacks & Comebacks: Covid, Struggle, and Finding My Way Back

Then came 2020, and honestly, everything hit pause. Working in construction meant shielding became my reality when Covid struck. Suddenly, I was isolated all over again—cut off from my team, my routines, and the fitness that kept me going. The mental and physical toll was brutal.

The pounds crept on, slow at first, then all at once—over six stone gained as gym sessions vanished and match days became memories. Maybe the hardest part to admit: I turned to alcohol for comfort, a short-term fix that left me feeling even more lost.

But just because you’re down doesn’t mean you’re out. On New Year's 2020, I made the decision to stop drinking. No miracle “aha!” moment—just one tough choice after another, day after day. It wasn’t easy, but it was the spark I needed.

When the world began to open up again, my football family reached out. In early 2021, I got the call to rejoin the Wales Transplant Team for the British Transplant Games in Leeds. That was my fuel. Over the next few weeks, I focused in—I lost the six stone I’d gained, bit by bit, session by session, meal by meal. The love for sport and fitness, which had felt miles away, came roaring back.

And Leeds? It was special. I came away with three bronze medals—archery, shot put, and ball throw—all hard-fought and hard-earned. Football didn’t quite go to plan that year, but the spirit, the competition, and the camaraderie—those were the real wins. It reminded me that even if not every goal goes in, showing up, pushing yourself, and being part of something bigger is what truly matters.

These setbacks reminded me: it’s normal to struggle. It’s normal to feel lost sometimes. But with the right community—and a decision to start, however small—you can change your story. That’s a lesson I’m passionate about sharing with every client who walks through my door.

Adding New Tools: Leveling Up & Giving Back

After Leeds, something in me clicked. Those medals weren’t just reminders of what I’d accomplished—they were proof that setbacks don’t have to be endpoints. I realized I wanted to do more than just overcome my own challenges. I wanted to help others do the same.

So, the student mentality kicked in. I went back to college, picking up new qualifications in sports performance, fitness, and personal training. Every late-night study session and early-morning gym class was fueled by that mission: to make a real difference for people who feel like their best days are behind them.

Transcend Performance has grown from a dream and a handful of hard-won lessons, into a real space where anyone—no matter what they’ve been through—can feel supported and understood. The medals, the certifications, the treatment room… they’re all milestones, but honestly, the most meaningful moments are seeing clients walk in burdened and walk out believing in themselves again.

I approach each person not as a “project,” but as someone with a story worth honoring. The power of shared experience—knowing that, truly, I get it—makes the journey towards “being at your peak” not just possible, but enjoyable.

Ready for Your Own Summit? Let’s Do This—Together

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for sticking with my story. Maybe you see a piece of yourself in these ups and downs—maybe you’re just looking for your next challenge, or maybe you’re still waiting for that “spark” to get started.

Here’s what I want you to know:
You don’t need a dramatic backstory, a shiny medal, or a perfect bill of health to start moving towards your own peak. You just need a bit of belief, some support, and a willingness to put one foot in front of the other—no matter how small that step feels.

Transcend Performance exists because I know what it’s like to struggle alone, to start over, and to chase goals that feel impossible. My commitment is simple: to meet you where you are, walk alongside you, and help you uncover just how strong, resilient, and capable you really are.

So—are you ready to take your first step? Reach out for a chat, book your first session, or just follow along for some inspiration.

Climb your mountain, rewrite your story, and remember: your “peak” is waiting. Let’s summit it together.
